‘WhatsFarzi’ app to detect fake newsIn order to fight the menace of fake news on social media, three students of Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Delhi have developed an app called ‘WhatsFarzi’. The app scans through the internet content and collect the news on topics to verify their credibility from the credible sources. The app is also capable of verifying whether an image or video has been tampered with. “One of my students started researching on the rapid spread of fake content on Twitter and Facebook, which inspired him to develop a Google Chrome browser extension for both the platforms. The continuous research by the team gradually gave birth to WhatsFarzi, which is now helping the vexed Indians to fight back such terrors”, said Ponnurangam Kumaraguru, associate professor at IIIT-Delhi. ‘WhatsFarzi’ app is the brain child of three computer science students from IIIT Delhi namely -- Madhur Tandon (22), Suryatej Reddy Vyalla (20) and Dhruv Kuchhal (23). Suryatej Reddy, a third-year student, said, “We use a knowledge graph to extract relevant information from people, organizations, locations and products available on the internet, update this graph with credible news, and store it in a secured database. The three exam centers are located in the districts of Balangir, Dhenkanal and Cuttack, said an official. "Based on the preliminary reports submitted by the respective district education officers (DEOs) and center superintendents, the examination committee of the Board has decided to cancel the Monday's paper of all the students who are writing their examinations at these centers,” informed BSE president Jahan Ara Begum. The committee will take the final decision after the ongoing exams are over on March 8. According to the reports, the students at these centers were engage in mass copying as guardians and teachers forced their way into the exam center and provided the students with the books and chits to the answers. "Although, policemen were deployed at these centers,they were outnumbered by the intruders," the BSE president said quoting available reports. "The number of admissions in private schools as per Section 12 of the Right to Education (RTE) Act has witnessed 240 per cent increase since 2015-16," said Sisodia. "32,455 EWS/DG category students have been admitted to private unaided schools through online lottery under the RTE Act against 25,178 during 2017-18 and around 20,000 in 2016-17," he added. He further said that against the target of adding nursery classes in 305 schools in 2018-19 until December, the government successfully introduced the same in 301 schools and 95 percent of the total seats were filled. The protocol was based on the recommendations of the Committee on the Welfare of Women, Transgenders, Children and Differently Abled under the state legislative Assembly and carries instructions for the institution heads, teachers, parents and students. According to the guidelines, secure password protections should be ensured at the institution along with the safe search practices on the internet. Faculties and students must be given access to the internet however; students’ access to the internet must be under the supervision of a teacher. Classrooms should have labels which must read secure browsing practices on the internet. Also, it is mandatory to conduct a cyber safety audit in the schools at least twice a year. K. Anvar Sadath, Vice Chairman and Executive Director of KITE, said “teachers have been instructed to browse and download ICT contents for their classes well in advance in order to avoid searching them online in classrooms in the presence of students, where there is a possibility of inappropriate content showing up in the search. Whenever Internet based learning projects are assigned to students, teachers have to pre-check the website and only the secure portals have to be advised. Internet usage in schools has to be strictly restricted for learning activities, official purposes and other learning/teaching related activities”. The guidelines list 11 safety measures which every student must follow strictly in order to keep him/herself safe online.
